Good News!

Well we have good news from the Endocrinologist! Caleb is biochemically NOT in puberty! Wow! We are thrilled!! Three months ago, the doctor said his puberty hormones had dropped, but this time he specifically said he wasn't in puberty!! Yay! Some of his growth hormones have dropped; some have stayed the same, but he is not jumping off the charts-he's tracking right with the growth curve just right above 100th percentile. So, we are relieved!!! Man, we feel so blessed that the Lord would see fit to protect our son once again-- He doesn't have to--every time I walk into that hospital and I see all of the children coming in and out, I am reminded that our health is a gift- it is a part of his plan for my life today and apparently Caleb's today too--but he allows sickness as well. He uses all things in our lives to draw us closer to Himself and to mold and shape us into His image. But we are so thankful that today He has chosen for Caleb to be unaffected by this tumor!! Thank you all for your many prayers!

I also wanted to go back and share about our wonderful Christmas!!

Before Christmas we got to make candy again with Ma - her famous hard candy. The kids loved helping, which means sampling a piece of every flavor.

Christmas was full and fun at Mom and Dad's. We enjoyed having the new addition, Grayson, aka Baby Ga Ga (with a long A sound) with us for Christmas. He was so precious--here he is trying to pull Annelise's hair! Caleb got Star Wars Legos- his very favorite right now and Annelise got a white convertible car that she can drive!! She was beside herself!! She drove it in the yard with Austin running after her steering it for her because she wouldn't watch where she was going but only stare at us and smile!!! It was hilarious!!

The next day we enjoyed Christmas at Ma's with the extended family. Christmas breakfast at Ma's is an old tradition that Ma has kept for years. She's also wearing her Christmas apron that I remember as a child so very well . I love old traditions- they are rich in memories.

On Christmas Eve we celebrated with Austin's dad, brother and family. We enjoyed a lunch and some presents!

Annelise got a babydoll stroller from her Papa- it's been one of her favorite gifts! She strolls her babies, feeds them, sings to them, and puts them down for a nap in "Ca's" room with music playing on a CD- with of course a blanket and pillow -- it's precious!

Caleb got more legos!! We've been amazed at how fast he can build a set--and amazed at his creativity when he's making up something new- he calls that "making up something out of his mind." We love it- however, the lego mess is something I don't love--he easily got 1000 new pieces for Christmas--I about went crazy-but we spent several hours sorting legos into colors, and that has helped.

On Christmas Eve night as a family we decorated a Gingerbread house. It was really fun! Our Christmas Eve traditions are 1) doing a family activity together like baking cookies or a Gingerbread house 2) opening up their Christmas PJ's to wear on Christmas Eve night 3) opening up their special keepsake ornament that represents their year- Caleb's was a cross because he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior this year and Annelise's was a purse- because she has fallen in love with purses this year! ha! 4) Caleb and Annelise opening the gift from each other- this tradition was mine growing up 5) and lastly we retell and/or read the story of the birth of Christ.

What a sweet Christmas Eve we shared this year!

Caleb woke up to more legos- surprise! And Annelise to a tea set, an easel - she loves to draw and paint, and a cash register for the both of them! They also got a ring pop in their stocking which is an absolute must- Caleb reminded me several times!

Here she is drinking real tea from her set and eating a chocolate chip cookie. She invited Caleb and Daddy to be her guests. I was the tea and cookie server.

And by far my favorite gift was a Christmas platter of Caleb and Annelise's hand and finger prints. I will cherish it always!

For lunch we celebrated Christmas with Austin's mom and family at Dewey and Janie's brand new house they built on their farm!! Here Austin stands with Aunt Janie- Austin's second mom- in her new kitchen. The house is so very lovely!

We had a wonderful meal as always!

Annelise spent most of her time with Pa. She loves her Pa and had many laughs with him on Christmas day.

Caleb spent most of his time with cousin Adam who also received legos for Christmas- ha! Adam was so sweet to let Caleb build with him- he was in hog heaven!

On Karen's birthday, Derek surprised us all with a night out in a limo ride! I couldn't believe it- I screamed when I saw it! This was a very special night for Karen- she is normally never home on her birthday since it's over the holidays, and D went out of his way to show her how much he loved her. What a special night for the six of us- including Jake and Tanya below. We drove to Franklin and ate at Saffire in The Factory. The food was delicious and the company even better. It was a night we won't forget. Thanks Derek for the memorable celebration!

There was a live pianist playing while we ate- it was great!

Lastly, on New Year's Eve we celebrated with some friends- we had fun eating, listening to the kids play in their make-believe band, and watching them wrestle with the dads before trying to put them down for bed. We were hopeful Annelise would go down- but no, maybe next time! We left early- such is the life of having little ones!- but it's so worth it!!

Here we are- apparently Liz and I wore matching outfits that night- didn't even realize it til I saw this picture. What sweet friends we have been blessed with in abundance!

MRI Results

Well the doctors told us today that Caleb's tumor has not grown in size. Yay! Therefore, they do not want to take any action! This is for sure an answer to prayer and a huge blessing! The enhancement (or metabolic activity), however, has increased since the last MRI which concerns them. This can lead to growth but doesn't always. So, due to the increase in enhancement, the doctor wants to continue to keep close tabs. Caleb will then be scheduled for another MRI in 3 months. We definitely were disappointed with this part of the news.

The heightened concern this last year with the slight growth of the tumor coupled with the discovery of his imbalanced hormones as kept Caleb's health in the forefront of our minds- we were hoping for a little bit of relief from this; however, we know that it's through the hard things, the uncertainty, the waiting that draws us nearer to our Father. It's in this place that his grace, his provisions, and his presence is magnified in our lives- and that is sweet! I've been encouraged from a dear friend and mentor, Kimberly, who herself is walking through a challenging time of uncertainty to write down the grace moments I'm witnessing. I have been journaling; however, I'm excited to start a separate list just of His grace in my life. - but I will start with sharing one from today with you!
This morning I woke up fairly normal, praying of course over today's results. However, as the morning progressed I became anxious. I began reciting verses, but the anxiety rose; my heart-rate elevated. I continued to say out loud God's Word, but I began to feel lightheaded with adrenaline pumping through my veins. I then started singing- this has been my strength. I felt this battle within me getting out of control, and I couldn't seem to gain the peace I was striving for. Kimberly text'd and reminded me that God was my warrior. It then hit me that I was in a battle, the Lord was fighting for me, and He would win! I was encouraged but still experiencing much anxiety. I waited for just a short time more and sure enough as quick as it came over me, it left! And I was in a place the rest of the day experiencing the perfect peace He offers his beloved ones! It was unexplainable!

We waited in that cell of a room for 45 minutes to an hour for the doctor to come in with who knows what news with children everywhere around us receiving chemo (it truly breaks my heart), and I sat there reading the Bible like I was in my living room drinking a cup of tea! I honestly couldn't believe it! I knew the doctor could walk in and say, "This is it, it's time for a biopsy." But I was being quieted by His love in that moment and it felt so amazingly good!
Zephaniah 3:17 says "The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing." What did I learn today? When I feel anxiety or fear creeping in, I will not feel guilty that I'm maybe not trusting in that moment but instead continue to face it, singing and reciting His Word and then waiting for His deliverance from the battle within me, trusting He will bring peace in His timing. You know, if I hadn't experienced the crazy anxiety today, I might have missed His amazing deliverance from it- so I'm very thankful- and I will recognize His peace even more after today. What a day! I am walking away changed! I'm definitely not the only one who has had a challenging day today- I pray that you might walk away changed too and experience the abundance of His grace and peace!

On Friday Caleb will see the Endocrinologist for more hormone testing. We will continue to keep you updated. We can not thank you enough for your prayers on our behalf- you are prayer warriors who have locked shields with us. What a blessing! Much love, Nicole

MRI Monday - Done

Just a short update. Today went well with the MRI - Caleb was very brave and while he did have a bit of trouble with the IV it ended up working out to not be so traumatic for him because they treated him to the funny gas while they did it.

It is now just a waiting game for us until Wednesday when we will find out more details.

MRI Monday

Hello friends....

Tomorrow we will be heading to Vanderbilt for another MRI. It is very hard for me to believe that it has been three months since our last MRI (October) - the days have flown by. Caleb's health from all exterior indicators is holding up. His vision seems to be excellent, and he is progressing quite well cognitively. Having started Kindergarten we can say with confidence that he has met that challenge, and by all accounts seems to be healthy.

Regardless of the perception of his health we always get nervous with these scans because the truth is we just do not know what is happening in his brain. We are so very hopeful for good news, and are asking that you join with us in prayer to this end. We have been blessed beyond words with the continual stream of friends, family and even strangers writing to share with us that they are praying for our son. We know that our God is capable of healing Caleb and we are so thankful for His sustaining power that has been displayed these last five years.

Also, will you pray with us that the nurse will get Caleb's IV in smoothly tomorrow? The last time they had to dig around and poke several times. Caleb has already voiced his concern and is a little anxious about that. Thanks so much.

Tomorrow morning at 9:00 is the MRI, but we will not hear results until mid-day on Wednesday. Once we get word back we will post again to share the news with you.

They have been obedient to the calling of adoption on their lives and have literally saved this precious soul and given him a new life (sounds a bit like our story as Christians!)

Here we are on Sunday, Nov. 6th worshiping on our new land for our church!! We are so excited!! We've journeyed with Monty and Kimberly for 11 years, and we are thrilled to be standing on the land where our church will be in the near future. Thank you Lord!

And here Austin and I are in Disney World!!! Yay!! We haven't been since we were kids!! Austin had a business trip in Orlando and I was able to join him for a long weekend. Our dear friends, Grant and Liz, were with us which made it all the more fun!! Grant works with Austin---and we were both kid-less!! so, it gave us the opportunity to be kids ourselves- running around with mouse ears on for 2 days- feeling so light and free! I haven't laughed so much in a long time.

At Disney it's Christmas already! We enjoyed an amazing, magical Christmas parade. That was one of my very favorite things we saw. And, FYI, they do have castle throws at Disney!! ;)

For a Thanksgiving art project we had over Austin and Emily to make vests and head dresses. We enjoyed Sarah Beth and Annelise joining in on the fun too! Home-school has really gone well the past several months. It has been so rewarding to work with Caleb at home-- and since we are getting more sleep at night, due to Annelise's cough being resolved, we are all feeling much better. Surviving is always so hard, and we are thankful for the rest we all have been getting.

And last but not least, we just spent the most wonderful weekend with our dear friends, Kevin and Virginia! We haven't seen them in over a year! We had some late-night girl time/guy time, breakfast at Cracker Barrel, and campfire smores with all of our kids. It was a special time. Thanks for making the trek here, friends! We love you tons!

The guys enjoyed a night of climbing- they all seemed very sore the next day!

Here is a picture of Annelise and Jack (they are 4 months apart). We laughed so much at all the silly things Jack said over the weekend- he is precious! and so is his little brother, Bennett, who I just met for the 1st time.

Thank you all, again, for your prayers and words of encouragement. We have truly felt them! Our next appointments won't be until mid January...so, in the meantime- Merry Christmas! We love you!

MRI Results

Today we met 1st with the Neurosurgeon. He informed us that the radiologist's findings were that there were no changes in the tumor since his last July scan; however, he believes that as he has looked over the last several scans, the enhancement of the tumor is continuing to change which worries him. Although he stated that Caleb's case does not have a cut and dry answer, his stance was that he believed he needed treatment due to the continuation of metabolic activity which could lend itself to irreversible damage.

This was hard to swallow as we waited for almost another hour and a half to meet with the Oncologist. However, Dr. Esbenshade came in with a much more positive outlook than we had expected! Praise the Lord! Although he did recognize the enhancements occurring, he stated that he did not feel it necessary to take action unless the tumor itself had grown- and in yesterday's scan it showed no growth! So, the plan is to continue to watch it closely. We have an appointment next Thursday with the Endocrinologist (hormone specialist) and then another MRI scan alongside of an eye examination in January.

We are very very thankful for no treatment at this time. The Lord has delivered us again today and we will worship Him! When I dwell on today, I am thankful; however when I begin to think what tomorrow may bring, I honestly can become paralyzed in fear. And so our prayer is that we will set our minds on things above, dwelling on His deliverance today; that we will trust Him today and lay tomorrow in His hands. For He has said in Lamentations 3:21-23 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Thank you is not enough for your prayers. I honestly believe they are a sweet smelling aroma to our Lord- he is hearing our cry and delivering us!

MRI Today

Today we saw our little man showing courage! The nurse was unable to get an IV in his hand. She worked hard sticking him twice even when the numbing cream wasn't working this time (at least not as well). He tried so hard to redirect his thoughts. We were so proud of him! Thank you for your prayers; we also felt His peace today. I was reminded tonight, from one of you, of a scripture that is very dear to my heart- I sang it for three years in my chorus group. "The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face to shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace." Numbers 6:24-26 - He is so gracious, isn't he? Psalm 139 reminds my of how he knows my every step, my every word before I say it; He knows the days that are numbered for me; His hand is upon me, will guide me, and will hold me fast...such knowledge is too wonderful!

We have two appointments tomorrow. One with the Neurosurgeon and one with the Oncologist. Both in the afternoon so it will be a very long day. We will post again tomorrow night. Thank you for all your support.

Fall is here!

We are loving the fall scenery that has come our way lately and the traditions that follow the cool, crisp air in Tennessee in October. (although it has been a bit warmer than usual!) Before I share some family highlights, we want to let you know that Caleb is having another MRI tomorrow (Tuesday), Oct. 18. We will go in for results on Wednesday. We thank you in advance for praying for our sweet Caleb and for us. It means more than words can describe. We will keep you updated.

Many of you have joined alongside of us through this past summer season of Caleb's health. If not, the brief overview is this: Caleb was diagnosed with a brain tumor -located in his optic nerve chiasm- at 9 months of age (it was an incidental finding). For 4 years the doctors at Vanderbilt have watched it approximately every 6 months. We have fortunately never seen any side affects and so they have left it alone. This past February the MRI came back as a slight change. This upped the doctors' concerns and began to run hormone tests and issued more frequent MRI scans. His hormones came back abnormal in May which caused the docs to come close to issuing treatment; however, in the midst of this they have decided to wait. Caleb has no visible signs of the tumor's affects. Although his hormones are at levels that indicate puberty, he has no physical signs! We feel the Lord has sustained him at this time and feel as though he is being delivered! We are humbled.
It has been a whirlwind of doctor appointments and tests- physical tests for Caleb and tests of faith for Austin and myself. Once again, He has proved to be the faithful one- giving us peace, endurance, and footing to stand in the midst of this storm. We are so thankful.
However, we have also had this summer some really hard health issues with Annelise- which is something we have yet to share on our blog (although many of you are fully aware). Back at the end of May, Annelise began coughing at night. After a few weeks, we took her in believing it to be allergies. After another several weeks of the medicine not working and our nights full of coughing and little sleep for all of us (except Caleb), we went back to the doctor. Unfortunately, for the next 3 months (total of over 4) symptoms worsened and we experienced a myriad of doctors appointments, medicines, and tests that led us finally to a Vanderbilt Pulmonologist (lung doc) at the beginning of October. He believed it was asthma and sure enough, we believe it is! The medicine is working, and we are so very thankful to have an answer! We hope and pray she will continue to get better and grow out of it sooner than later....all this to say, we have truly felt hard pressed in this season, but have not felt abandoned. We know the Lord has a purpose for all of these trials to refine each of us, mold and shape us, and teach us dependence on His grace for each day. Thank you again to all of you who have been walking through this with us- we have been and are still in a needy place. We love you!

The 1st weekend in October a bunch of our friends joined us as we journeyed to the Gentry's Farm. We look forward to this special day each year. Playing in the corn is always such fun!

That night we all gathered again at our house for a chili cookout and marshmallow roast! It was a super fun time. We had four different kinds of delicious chili- yummy! The Lord blessed us with the most perfect night- it will be a sweet memory.

In September we took a trip with my family to Gatlinburg. We stayed in a cabin up in the mountains- we had the most beautiful view! We enjoyed shopping, go cart riding, a visit to the aquarium, playing games, eating yummy food, and chasing a momma bear and her 4 cubs from our trash!! Crazy!! She was scary! Dad got a little too close one time- I have never seen a bear that close nor do I ever want too again- it charged at my dad! Whew- we are glad he is safe!

Caleb had a blast riding around the race track with his two uncles. And it seemed they had just as much fun as he did!

Something you might not know about Annelise is that she LOVES ice! It's a treat around our house, so whenever she's with Mimi and GaGa (aka Grandaddy) she always gets it- Dad even goes to Sonic to pick her up some! ;) how sweet!

Ma joined us on our trip which is always a blessing. As we were packing for the trip Annelise made up a song/chant with only three words, "Mimi, GaGa, Ma!" She sang it over and over while turning in circles!! Caleb is showing off his Star Wars T-shirt that Ma bought him.

Here is a baby bear cub that is approaching Dad on the porch right outside our door. The Lord was showing us His glory VERY close!! ;)

In the midst of the hard issues over Caleb's health this summer, he has accomplished some milestones that have transitioned him in our minds from a child to a young boy. #1 -at the end of June Caleb began riding his bike without training wheels! Wow! He really did it very effortlessly which was kinda surprising! #2- He also lost his very 1st tooth this summer! He was so excited. #3-Then at the end of the summer, Caleb passed the swim test at the YMCA (this lets you swim "parent free.") Man were we proud!! #4- Lastly, at the end of August/1st of September Caleb started Kindergarten! This marks a transition that will last for many years we pray. School! We can't believe it is time for Caleb to start school! It has gone by so very fast. This transition has been a big one for all of us because we have decided to home-school. I never dreamed that I would home-school but feel the Lord has led us down this amazing path. We will take it one year at a time. So far it has been an absolute joy to teach Caleb and Annelise (she's right with us!). Even though I have been teaching Caleb over the last 5 years, it is now a little more structured yet very flexible at the same time. Austin set up a space for us in the bonus room, and he even made a special table for us to work at each day. I am so thankful for the opportunity to watch my children grow and expand their knowledge of the amazing world God has made.

We are thrilled that Caleb is attending a Home-school Tutorial one day a week. He is getting to experience a classroom setting- and is loving it! He is in the same class with his dear friends, Austin and Emily as well. They are being home-schooled this year too! It's been fun doing some things together.

Each morning they meet together and have a time of worship. Here they are on their 1st day.

And our sweet baby girl has really grown up as well this summer! Right before our eyes she as transformed from a baby to a toddler- we just can't believe it! #1-She was easy-breezy to potty train back in July at just 2 years and 1 month! She was so precious-she would stop playing, gasp, and dramatically say, "Need pee pee!!!" and run to the bathroom. Where she gets her dramatic expressions I'll never know! ;) #2-Annelise's vocabulary has exploded this summer as well. She needs a translator like her big brother a lot of times, but she's talking a mile a minute! Words that end with a hard sound like "k" or "t" she ends with a soft sound like "p." So, night is nipe and socks are sops. ;)

#3-Another step for Annelise is singing and counting! She can count to 10 and has begun to sing with us as a family!! Yay! Her favorite is Jesus Loves Me, but she will join in on most all other songs- it's precious to hear her singing to the Lord- especially with her deep, raspy voice. #4-And I am very happy to say that Annelise has memorized her 1st scripture: Proverb 3:5- "Trust in the Lord with all your heart." We have worked so hard on it! She is so proud!! She truly isn't a baby anymore!

Here is the 1st tooth Caleb lost. He lost it while eating a sandwich at Newk's!

We went to the beach the 1st week in August! It was such a blessing to be able to get away for some much needed R&R. We truly had the best time! Annelise's cough was very manageable that week by the grace of God, so we were able to sleep a bit more as well as enjoying the beach, the sand and the pools.We named this trip "The Need Peepee Beep (Beach) Trip!" Annelise had just been potty trained a couple of weeks before, and an 8 hour trip took us 12 hours instead! Its seemed like about every 30 minutes Annelise had to go. She learned how to go on the side of the road on this trip! She couldn't say beach properly but her pronunciation of "beep" was precious.

One night we went go-cart racing. We all had a blast! Annelise cried when we left because she wanted to do it again. She's a thrill seeker!

Caleb and Daddy rode together; however, Caleb got to ride his own go-cart (a smaller version) as well- he was big stuff driving around the track!

Caleb wanted to do the rubber-band jumping thing- he was a little nervous but was glad he did it!

It was such a sweet family time at the beach (aka: the beep). Thank you, Lord for this gift.

Hello friends,

Today we visited with the Oncologist to get the results of Caleb's scan and the news is good - there has been no change in his tumor since February. This news is of course quite a relief for us and we are so very grateful as we reflect on it. Our son is being sustained through this trial and we hope this news brings joy to your hearts as it does ours.

Our next date is August 9 when we see his eye doctor and then August 22 when we will visit with Endocrinology and potentially conduct more blood studies for hormone levels. The next MRI will be in three months.

First of all we want to say how truly encouraged our hearts were and are that so very many of you took the time to pray with us a couple of Sundays ago. We were humbled by those who gathered around us in our church body, and by those from Harpeth Hills and many others in the Nashville area! Wow! We wholeheartedly believe that God heard all of our fervent prayers for Caleb; we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for going to the Father on our behalf not only collectively that Sunday but all of the many times you have prayed for us over the years. What a gift!

To keep you updated, Caleb is having another MRI tomorrow Tuesday, July 19th. We then will find out the results on Wednesday. We will keep you posted.

Many have asked how we have been doing with all of this, and I thought I’d take a moment to share. I was singing last night to the kids the song, “I will Sing of the Mercies of the Lord Forever,” and it dawned on me how I truly wanted to sing to you of His mercies over the past couple of months. During this time we have heard news that we hoped we would never ever hear from any doctors at any time. It felt like a nightmare coming true- the nightmare in the back of our minds the past 4 and a half years. We have felt and still do feel fear, anxiety, and sadness, but I can honestly say that in the midst of these very strong emotions we don’t feel consumed or characterized by them. We know this strength is not of ourselves but from our heavenly Father, because we know there have been days we could literally be paralyzed in fear or swimming in our own tears. I have told several people that I have felt like I’m walking in some scary deep dark woods; however instead of panicking or being paralyzed in fear, I realize that I am not alone- that Christ is present. I still cannot see where I am going, and it feels really scary, but I know that He is with me and ultimately He is in control. That is an amazing feeling! The God of the heavens and earth is with me and at work in me- the Emmanuel, the Jehovah Shama! He is with Caleb and Austin and every single one of us- it’s “His incomparably great power that is at work within us who believe (Eph. 1:19,20)- the same amazing power that raised Christ from the dead! I was reminded of a verse from a friend- 2Cor. 4;8-9 “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” Paul was not consumed because he was being lifted up by God’s everlasting arms “for those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength…” Isaiah 40:31 We are experiencing Him in this way and we thank you for your prayers. We know that we are not the only ones walking through hard things, and we would absolutely love to pray for you. Please let us know how we might better do that.

We have truly been encouraged that God has delivered us today from having to take action through treatment at Vanderbilt. God has answered all of our and your prayers on that so far, and we are very grateful. I feel like there is more to share of the things he is teaching us and the prayers He's answering, but I will have to write more later. For now I'd like to share the highlights we've had in the midst of the storms over the past 2 months.God has been so good!

Here were are at our Adoption Yard Sale! We raised over $1000 dollars!! Wow! We think the Lord multiplied it before our eyes! Caleb sold lemonade for several hours and yelled, "Lemonade for sale! We're adopting!" from the top of his lungs!! ;) He kept asking why people were laughing at him! We long to know the child God has for us and look forward to bringing her home.

Here are all the kids helping out. Chase's girlfriend, Krystle, came up to help watch Annelise for the day. She was a tremendous blessing! Thank you again!!

Annelise turned 2 in June! We can't believe it! She is talking up a storm (putting 3-5 words together) and she makes us laugh every day! Some of our favorite things she is saying these days are: Whyee (why), LaLa (water), GiGi (her lovey), What do do daddy? (what are you doing daddy), framfreen (trampoline), Ah Ah (monkey).
She is taking a interest in accessories and jewelry lately. She puts on my bracelets one by one up past her elbow. She slips on my heals and surprisingly walks quite well in them!! She is also loving baby dolls. She bounces gently while holding one and says "Sh Sh Sh" in a rhythmic fashion to put the baby to sleep- it's precious!! I painted her toenails for the 1st time on her birthday- she was so excited. We have been eating her up lately!!Here she is celebrating her birthday at Ma's- she received all kinds of dress-up jewelry and loved it!

For her birthday we had a dance party/cookout at a nearby park. Austin dubbed a CD of our favorite dance music to play for everyone. Annelise loved it!

The next week Annelise and I had a couple of days without Caleb because he was enjoying VBS at my parents' church. We had some special moments together- it lightly rained one morning, and we had fun playing with her new umbrella and hat.

Moments before Annelise's birthday party, we took Caleb down to the river and baptized him. It was truly a beautiful, memorable moment I won't forget. I love the history behind baptism and the connection it brings to all believers. Christians have been baptized for two thousands years now- and many more Jews before them- repenting of their sins and getting themselves ready for the long-awaited Messiah. I can't imagine how beautiful it must have been to stand there on the edge of the river and see Jesus being baptized. What a sight! To Caleb: We are so very proud of you for taking this step of faith. We look forward to watching our Father transform you into His likeness with ever increasing glory...2Cor. 3:18

I also loved watching my amazing husband have the privilege of baptizing our 1st born. He is the most fabulous father!

WE LOVE YOU!

Also in June we had the privilege of keeping the Kramer kids on and off for a week while their parents took their 1st of two trips over seas to bring home their adopted son. Timothy loved playing dress up with Caleb- he's a knight/superhero- makes sense to me! (I love Annelise in this cowboy hat and pistol! )

Stella loved the rocket. I couldn't get enough kisses from those adorable cheeks!

Caleb and Emily had a sleepover, and we took them to the opening night of Cars2!! They were thrilled and couldn't wait for it to begin! These two kids have been obsessed with Cars for years!! It was a fun night.

Also at the end of June Austin surprised me with tickets to the New Kids on the Block concert!! I was ecstatic!! When I was between the years of 10-13, I was a die-hard fan. It felt like being a kid again-Austin was so sweet to take me- he was one of just a few men in the arena with a gazillion 25-40 year olds!!

I sang the whole night from the top of my lungs! ;)

Another major event took place in the month of June...my nephew, David Grayson, was born on the 24th! It was such a special moment to be there with my family as the excitement rose with the anticipation of his arrival.

Test Update

Hello friends,

From our last post you will recall that we had another round of blood tests to confirm previous findings of elevated growth hormone levels in Caleb. We heard back from our doctors this week that while the levels were slightly lower than previously recorded his levels were still elevated above normal.

They ran another test on two different hormones that check for the onset of puberty at a chemical level. They ran this test not because he shows signs of puberty, but because studies show that if this tumor is behaving like it is expected there could be indications of early onset of puberty. We were saddened to find out that we also have this problem to deal with in Caleb. The levels of these hormones in his body were also elevated.

After chatting with the doctors they are still uncertain about the prognosis for Caleb though – in most circumstances you will have some physical complications to deal with before you resort to treatment. In Caleb’s case we simply don’t have any physical complications. In one conversation I was told that “Caleb really is in a very small percentage of patients – he does not have the physical complications that are typically present.” As scary as this sounds, I really do believe this is not an accident – that there are reasons beyond our understanding that Caleb has been insulated from the impact of his situation.

Because Caleb does not have physical complications – only bio chemical – the professional community is torn with how to move forward with him. There are known risks in both of the treatment options (Hormone Therapy & Chemo) – and there are known complications that will occur. Here you have a child who does not presently have complications and both options for treatment will create problems in his physical body. This conservative attitude of reservation is one that really gives us peace as we move forward, and were thankful to hear their struggle with this.

The next steps for Caleb will be that he will have another MRI at the end of July and he will have more blood work done in August with the present understanding that absent big changes we will do that every two months. The thought of putting him through this is very hard for us, but given the alternative we think it is the wisest decision that could be made at the moment.

We continue to look for ways to help his body win this fight, and we continue to seek your prayers for the healing of our son. We are scheduled to have a time of prayer for Caleb this Sunday 7/3/11 from 11:45 – 12:15pm at Blackman Middle School – our church meets at this school (www.fbcrc.org). We will have child care provided, and anyone who can make it is welcome to come seek the Lord for the healing that we truly believe He can provide.

If you cannot make it on Sunday but would like to join us in this time of prayer from afar here is what we will be asking for prayers with.

That Caleb’s body will make war on the tumor and that it will be taken from him. It is known that these events do happen, and it has even been experienced by our medical team. We are asking that however God has made it so that our bodies can attack these things that are not supposed to be there will be activated in Caleb, and we will see a miracle take place. That Caleb will come through this struggle unscathed, whole and healthy.
That Caleb’s vision will remain healthy. A great risk of this tumor is the loss of his vision. If there is vision loss it is unknown if it could be restored through therapy such as chemo. We are praying that this will not happen to Caleb, that his body will be protected from this risk.
That Caleb will remain emotionally & socially healthy as he continues to learn more about his condition. He presently knows very little about what is going on. As he learns more there is the great likelihood that he will fear it or that he will see himself as “different” than his friends.
That Caleb will not experience physical signs of early puberty. This will be a game changer for what needs to happen with regard to treatment. His body needs to hold off the hormones that are presently elevated so that changes do not begin before they should.
That Caleb will not have long term physical complications from the elevated growth hormone levels in his body. There is the risk of developing pretty severe complications from prolonged elevation of growth hormone – we are praying that his body would either suppress the growth hormone or that it will remain unaffected by its elevation.
That we as parents will be compassionate and understanding with our son as he faces lots of doctors, feels fear, gets poked on and sits in cold waiting rooms. That we will show him the love of Christ and help him experience his emotions in healthy ways.
That we will make wise choices for his future. At some point we may have to make hard choices about his treatment, and we are asking that God will provide us with the wisdom we need to make the choice that is best for his future.
That we will be united as partners in this struggle for our son’s health. The stress of the situation can create tension in our relationship. We are praying that our children would experience a peaceful home that is full of love and grace even in the middle of the hard things of life.
That God would bring glory to himself in this process. That He would show his power through our son. That we would daily chose to place our faith and confidence in Him. That we would place our hope in him and not in a miracle – even as we pray for a miracle to occur.

It really is a huge blessing to have friends who care for us and are walking through this with us. Thank you for your encouraging words, prayers and support - you have been a very real blessing to our family.

Tests

Hey guys - just a quick note to let you know that today starting at 8:30 Caleb is having another round of blood tests to confirm the initial hormonal issues. He will have about five hours of blood tests conducted today so we would really appreciate your prayers. The test required fasting - something he is not a fan of - and it is just hard for a five year old to sit in a doctors office for five hours.

So - if you would pray that this would go well we would really appreciate it. We also continue to seek your prayers for healing for our son. The results of this test are significant because we will be making decisions based upon their findings. If these tests find the first test to be an anomaly that would be an amazing thing... which is not completely a foreign idea. We will post back once we know more - probably next week.

They are adopting a beautiful baby boy that has captured their heart in many ways and we are thrilled to be walking through this with them.

Caleb Update

Dear Friends,

We met this past Thursday with a Geneticist at Vanderbilt to have Caleb reviewed for a genetic condition called Neurofibromatosis. If he has this condition it will be helpful in describing his tumor – for possible treatment. In review of Caleb, the doctor was unable to identify Caleb as having NF and went so far as to say he does not believe he has NF as it is commonly seen in children. We have a blood test that is scheduled to be back on Thursday that will hopefully add confirmation to this clinical review.

The Geneticist did however present us with a third possible option for our next steps. He was able to locate two studies conducted on children who had similar circumstances including the tumor. This option involves treating Caleb with a synthetic form of a hormone that our body uses to regulate the production of growth hormone. There have been some theories that an abundance of growth hormone may contribute to the growth of optic pathway tumors (what Caleb has) and that if properly regulated we may be able to stop the progression of growth.

Treating with this hormone may then buy us two wins – it could stop the growth of the tumor and it could help his body better regulate growth hormone.

This week is going to bring some more tests to confirm the findings we are dealing with and more conversations between doctors regarding this possible alternative. Please pray for wisdom in these conversations, that fear will be bridled by risk and that the correct next steps can be determined.

Today's Meetings

Today we had meetings with Neurology and Oncology. These meetings were hard discussions to have. We have confirmed that what we knew on Monday is pretty much the direction they are going to advise. There are some variables still in the mix with regard to the genetic testing that is being conducted, but regardless of the outcome of that test there are no "good" options on the horizon (Chemo or Biopsy are the two options).

We did discuss the possibility of another round of waiting and evaluation, but that too has risks and complications we may encounter - so truly there are no good choices.

What we need most right now are your prayers for wisdom, peace and healing. We know there is a plan in these events, and we earnestly want to trust and rest in this, but we also confess this is a very hard place to be situated.

We thank each of you for your prayers and words of encouragement today.

Tumor Review Board

Dear Friends,

In our last post we shared with you that Caleb would be having a test conducted by his Endocrinology doctor to check for proper pituitary function. Caleb did an excellent job during this test and we thank you for your prayers. The test results came back, and they didn’t contain good news for us.

The specific test conducted was designed to measure Human Growth Hormone levels as they respond to the “things” in our body that are supposed to suppress their production. The markers for these things in his blood were outside of the appropriate range for his age. It was discussed by his Endocrinology doctor that a likely cause of these imbalances was the growth very near the pituitary gland.

The next step was today – today there was a tumor board review for Caleb’s case. In these reviews a series of doctors review the most recent information and make decisions with regard to the plan of action.

I tried several times today to reach the Ophthalmologist, the Neuro-Surgeon and the Endocrinologist but for a series of reasons (all perfectly good) we were not able to get in touch with them. I was able to talk with the Neuro-Surgeon’s nurse and she gave me a very quick summary which included strong suggestion that either a biopsy or chemo would be the next steps.

For over four years now we have not had any considerations such as this that were so near to actuality – so these thoughts and possibilities have taken an emotional toll on us today. I want to repeat that I have not actually spoken to any of the doctors yet, and that I will try to get in touch with them again tomorrow for sure. Right now we are scheduled to meet with the Neuro-Surgeon on Wednesday at 2:00 and on Thursday with Genetics. I am hopeful that we will get clarification after these visits.

We whole-heartedly request your prayers for wisdom in our conversations, with our words and with what happens next. We want what is best for our son – no question about it - but we are also scared of the choices we will have to make for him. We don’t know anything for sure because we have not talked to the doctors, but the news that we do know has been deeply troubling for us today.

Adoption Yard Sale!

Hey everyone we just wanted to get the word out that we are having a last-minute yard sale at our house this weekend to raise money for our adoption of a baby girl from the Philippines! Many of you know, however some may not, that 3 years ago God laid it on our hearts to start the process of adoption. We decided on a country, chose two agencies and got accepted, and then felt the Lord lead us to having another child of our own. Our hearts have not stopped beating for the baby girl He has for us even as we have waited the past several years- we know His timing is perfect and have been trying to rest in that...

With the news of Caleb's tumor enhancement three months ago, we felt it wise to wait a bit longer. Even with thegood news we received last week, we still feel the need to hold off a bit longer as wewait for several other test results to come back here in the next month or so.

With all thatsaid…we decided at the last minute that while waiting we could still have ayard sale (we've been saving for years)! So, we are having a sale this Saturday, May 28^th!We wanted you to know for several reasons…we would love your prayers thatpeople would come out and buy; and prayers for strength- we areexhausted from just a crazy month- I told Austin last night, ”I’m feeling astired as a mom with a newborn baby!”

I think this picture is hilarious! Caleb received his medal for soccer last week- the team put their hands together and said, "Go Quick Silver" - their team name- Caleb no doubt will be in the pep club one day!! Ha!!

Hello Friends

Yesterday (Wednesday) was Caleb's MRI appointment. In our last visit (three months ago) the doctors saw slight "enhancement" in his tumor. It was not known if this enhancement was a possible sign that the tumor was going to grow or not, but they opted to bring him back after a short period to have another look.

We are so very happy to tell you that the tumor has not grown and there appears to be no further enhancement that can be seen in the scans! We are so very grateful that the news was good in that regard. Caleb was a trooper and was so brave throughout the entire day. We were able to see the Neurosurgeon on the same day - so this was another very real blessing.

Our next steps are that this Tuesday we will visit with Endocrinology where they will conduct a two hour test on Caleb to check for proper function of his pituitary gland. Please pray this day goes well because he will have to be laying down for two hours during this test and they will need to take blood several times from him. We would love prayers for peace - for us and him.

Spring!

This Spring has been full of some wonderful family times! Before I share some of the highlights, we wanted to let everyone know that Caleb has another MRI this Wednesday, the 18th. We would love prayers that it will not only go smoothly but that the results will be better than 3 months ago. Our last scan showed some signs of potential change, and of course that has given us a scare. Because of the proximity to the pituitary gland we have appointments to see Endocrinology and Genetics experts this month in hopes we can keep a closer eye on hormone levels. We are prayerful for good news with each of these visits. Our first is Wednesday the 18th - we would love your prayers for peace in all of our hearts and good news for our son.

Caleb turned 5 in March!! We can't believe it! He had his first ever birthday slumber party with his best friends- a Buzz Lightyear party!

We made up a cool obstacle course for the kids that had them climbing a "mountain," navigating through the balloon pit, dodging Surg's fire balls, narrowly missing the lava pit, and soaring through the air with Buzz's wings! And we of course had to have some cool music to play while performing-Indiana Jones theme song!! It was a blast! The kids enjoyed eating popcorn and watching Toy Story 3 at the end of the night too. It was a memorable birthday for Caleb- he loved every minute!

We had lots of family celebrations as well for Caleb's birthday- so glad for family! On Caleb's actual birthday Austin took the day off, and we went to the Nashville Zoo! It was fun to spend the day together seeing all of the amazing animals. That night we had over Papa and Meredith, Weatherly, Uncle Chase and Krystle. We enjoyed some yummy chili and Blueberry Dump Cake!

In March we also enjoyed a visit from my dear friend Meghan!! -all the way from London! yea! It was a lovely time of catching up, eating dinner, and reminiscing of old times- (we danced together for years). We love you, Meghan!

Also in March we signed Caleb up for Spring Soccer! His first sport! And Daddy was one of the coaches! We didn't know how he'd really like it, but it turned out to be so much fun for all of us- he played with 4 of his dearest friends and looked forward to every practice and game. We were so proud of him for hustling out there, keeping up with the ball, and doing his best every time- He also scored a goal one time- we were so proud! We also enjoyed going out to dinner after practice every Friday night with our friends- the season will be a memorable one for all of us.

KG came to several games and got to see Caleb score!! She enjoyed remembering all the soccer games she attended for Austin.- it was sweet to listen to her reminisce about her baby playing- and for me too- I watched Austin play high school soccer!

One of the favorite parts of the game for all the kids was the snack afterward- of course! Austin made sure we brought orange slices for the team- that was something he remembered the moms always bringing to his soccer games.

In April we celebrated Annelise's dedication at church. It was really a dedication of us as parents-dedicating ourselves to raising Annelise to know Christ. It was a special day! The dress she is wearing here was my dress when I was her age- Mom made it for me! It is very special, and I'm so glad Mom saved it for her. Your work is beautiful and timeless, Mom- thank you!

Family came up for her dedication and joined us for worship at church and then some yummy lunch! Thank you family for your continual support of us as we raise Caleb and Annelise to know Christ. We love you!

In April we enjoyed our 4th year at Merri Acres Farm with our dearest friends. There were 12 adults and 14 kids!! Wow, what a bunch! The farm trip is a highlight of our year- we had an absolute blast! The Lord blessed us with perfect weather despite the forecast- we enjoyed fishing, riding bikes, trips in the truck through the fields, homemade ice cream, rocking on the front porch with a cup of coffee, splashing in the cold creek water, eating smores around the campfire and singing songs, feasting on hamburgers, homemade salsa and guacamole, laughing at something silly the kids were doing just about every second, and making memories that will last a lifetime! Thank you Staggs Family for keeping the farm for us to enjoy, and thank friends for coming with us- you mean the world to us!- and to the Moores- we truly missed you this year and hope you can join us again next year. We love you.

Here are all the kidos- the love of our lives- what gifts they are from the Lord!

Here we are eating homemade ice cream while swinging on the porch.

At night after the kids went to bed, the adults sat around a campfire. One night we all shared funny stories that had happened to us- we all laughed so hard we cried over and over again- it was good for the soul! The next night we all shared things that were/are going on in our lives and prayed for each couple- it was a real time of opening up our hearts, loving and supporting each other, and being the body of Christ. What a special time.

For Caleb's birthday this year he got a real riffle from Grandaddy and Mimi! He got a chance to shoot it for the 1st time at the farm- he loved it!

My cousin Allison just had her 1st, Alexandria, in January. She is such a doll- we are thrilled for her and Andrew. Allison and I shared so many precious memories together growing up. She was a sweet gift - especially not having a sister around.

Here we are Easter Sunday celebrating with KG, Chase, and Krystle. It was a beautiful day!

Caleb loves to wrestle with anyone who will get on the floor- Chase got tackled the second he said "Sure!"

This picture makes me laugh- Annelise looks like she just got a big diamond ring- Ha! (so does KG!) I love that about children- they get so excited about the smallest of things- a lesson for me!

I love this picture- those baby cheeks, baby lips, and baby fingers wrapped around the tree I gave to Austin on his 1st Father's Day-a tree to remind us of the gift of our children.

Last but not least, this Spring Caleb asked Jesus to come into his heart! We are thrilled. I could tell he had been thinking about it for at least a week or so- asking questions and wanting to talk about it more. - specifically about a book called Adam Raccoon and the King's Big Dinner (a parable book for kids). He asked about the big dinner God was going to have for believers and wondered if he'd be there. I told him all those who ask Jesus to forgive them of their sins and surrender their hearts to him would be there, adopted into God's forever family. He said, "I want to be there, Mom, right between you and Dad!" Then on April the 26th- a day that I had set aside for rest for us- playing in the floor with Annelise and me he brought it up again- asking to talk about the promise God made to Abraham. He said, "I want to be in God's family and to be apart of the promise God gave Abraham." Then with the biggest grin he ran back to his room, and got on his knees by his bed-I followed him. He said he wanted to ask Jesus to come into his heart. We talked about what that really meant, and he prayed the sweetest prayer I will never forget- it was music to my ears! He then told me he wanted to be baptized. So, we are going to baptize him in the Stones River next month!

- I know that he is young, but I also know that he gets it- he didn't just want to be like someone older than himself- he truly wanted to be apart of God's family and he knew that it was a choice only he could make. The gospel is amazing because it is truly simple enough for a child to understand yet profound enough to make us continue to "work out our salvation" and "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior" for a lifetime. And I'm convinced that on that day Caleb knew he was a sinner and that he needed a Savior- and he knew the only true Savior is Jesus Christ. I believe the angels were singing that day as they wrote his name in the book of life. And what a blessing for me to witness my son be transferred from the dominion of darkness as Colossians 1:13 tells us and into the kingdom of the Son he loves!!! "Praise the Lord oh my soul, all my inmost being praise his Holy Name...who forgives all your sins...who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion...for as high as the heavens are above the earth so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the East is from the West, so far has he removed our transgressions from us... Psalm 103.

May the wonder of the most amazing gift we could ever receive continue to capture our hearts, make us humble, and cause us to follow after Him!

He is with us!

From Austin: We heard yesterday from the doctors at Vanderbilt with regard to the collective thoughts of the tumor board. They are in agreement that since Caleb is a healthy young boy with no complications relating to the tumor that to take any action would not be justified at this time. We were of course relieved to hear this news and are so thankful for all of you that prayed for these doctors as they discussed our son.

Because the doctors are concerned with the changes in the tumor they have decided that what they would like to do is to get some baseline information on him so that if we see complications in the future we will have some standards to compare with. Because the tumor is very near the hypothalmus he will see an Endocrinologist so that we can keep good tabs on hormonal changes he could experience in the future. The doctors also really desire to determine if he has a specific condition that is often associated with a tumor in this region, and because of this desire they want him to see a Geneticist. There is a test which cannot rule the condition out but it can rule it in - if it confirms he has this gene then it is likely the rest of the symptoms needed for clinical diagnosis will appear over time. We do not have a date for the next MRI yet but the doctors have indicated it will be between three and six months out.
All in all we are comforted by this news... we continue to remain hopeful for the future and we ask that you continue to partner with us in prayer for Caleb's healing. We are so very thankful for those of you that have expressed your love and concern for us over the past few weeks... you are a very real blessing in our lives.

From Nicole: The last couple of weeks have truly been a whirlwind of emotions, from deep sadness and fear of the unknown to the overwhelming burden of the decisions that we might and are having to make for our son both medically and naturally (meaning the diet decisions we are making for him and our family). However, as we've laid our heads down at night and as we've woken each morning and as we've gone about daily tasks, I have been amazed at the stillness in my heart- at the deep sense of the presence of God-honestly it's hard to describe. Most of you who might be reading this know exactly what I'm talking about because you too have had your share of storms in this life. I feel Him saying over me, "I am with you. I am your helper. I go before you. I love you, and I love Caleb." I open up His Word and He speaks to me- to me! I thought I might share some of the things he's been speaking over me not only in the last 2 weeks but in the last 4 years-I feel like it's one word he's had for me; however, he's been revealing it in pieces over the years.

Four years ago, God reminded me of the familiar verse from Lamentations 3 that I sang all growing up..."The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases...."; however, reading it in context and in the NIV version shed new meaning to me. The author just a few verses before describes a time of hardship deprived of peace that leaves his soul downcast; however he then goes on to say, "Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassion never fails..." He chooses to renew his mind-he reminds himself of the Lord's great love which gives him hope and causes him not to be consumed- consumed with what you might ask?? I say consumed and paralyzed in fear, sadness, and worry. This verse has reminded me to hold up my shield of faith to the flaming arrows of fear that want to consume me and to instead look for the mercies that are promised to me every morning. It has given me great hope as Jeremiah said in verse 20.

At a women's retreat several years ago, I felt the Lord impress upon my heart the words "stand firm" from Exodus 14 and Ephesians 5 and the calling to pray fervently for Caleb also from Ephesians 5. In Exodus 14, God is leading the Israelites out of Egypt. The Egyptians are close behind, and the people are frightened. Moses tells the people in verse 13-14 to "Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today...The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still." In Ephesians 5: 10-18 (which I won't write out in full), Paul is speaking of the armor of God against Satan, and he says 4 times to stand! I felt God calling me to stand and to pray hard. But what exactly does it mean for me to stand I asked myself? I feel He's been revealing it to me over these years...

I began to read a book by Chip Ingram called The Invisible War trying to better understand Satan and the spiritual realm we can not see. It has been truly enlightening- learning to be prepared and aware of Satan's schemes to destroy Christ's light within me. Also, in the midst of Caleb growing up over the years I've been amazed at how God has spoken to my heart as I've been teaching my son about Jesus and explaining profound truths to him- it's amazing how verbalizing these ideas actually in turn speaks to me! It's like the saying, "If you want to best learn something, teach it." We sing regularly the familiar song "The Wise Man Built his House upon the Rock," and I've had the challenge of teaching Caleb what that song actually means! It's not easy explaining Jesus as the rock and the winds and rain as hard things in life...but it's been ringing in my ear...ringing that Christ is the Rock that I STAND on-his teachings and in His Name I STAND!- you see I'm not capable of standing in my own flesh when these storms come- I will be CONSUMED in fear and crushed under the rains without daily choosing to believe (present participle believe- Beth More!) today that He is with me and choosing to receive his mercies today just as the Israelites in faith gathered the manna God provided daily...

Then again just last week as I tried to explain to Caleb what it means to be imitators of God (from Ephesians 5:1)- what do we imitate? We imitate His character, Caleb. Well what is His character? Well, it's the fruits of the Spirit. But we can't do that-we fail- but He has not called us to imitate himself without giving us help- no! He has given us himself to dwell within our hearts- to not only help us imitate him but to actually be Christ in us!!! I was taken back as I felt in my heart he said to me, "I am in you, Nicole- not only to help you imitate me, but to give you the strength to STAND today and not be consumed, to hold up the shield of faith today, to pray for your son today, to trust me no matter the outcome, and to have the strength to fix the food you are fixing for Caleb, to trust, to trust, to TRUST ..and this is what it means to STAND!...I was reminded of another verse mentioned in CBS from Ephesians 3:16 -Paul prays that we might be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith." He dwells within me...there are no words for the peace that those words bring.

I've been humming a song lately and not remembering all the words- but today we sang it at church! It's called "In Christ Alone"- thank you Kevin Perry! God moved in you this song for me! It talks about standing! here are some of the lyrics:

Here is a link to Travis Catrell singing the song- it is truly powerful. I cried when I sang it on Sunday. He is speaking, if we will listen- He has a word for us all through whatever storms whether big or small. He longs for us to stand, to trust, and to watch Him move in our lives, in other's lives, and to ultimately defeat the enemy. Will you join me in standing today?

At the end of Janurary Austin and Caleb went duck hunting for the first time.

Although they didnt see any ducks they had a great time with Grandaddy and Will T.

They did get to see two bald eagles - which was a glorious thing to watch.

Caleb told his Grandaddy that his duck call didn't "sound much like a duck"
They got a chuckle out of this - Grandaddy has been calling ducks for a lot longer than anyone else we know! I guess the sound Grandaddy made didn't sound like "Quack, Quack!" Ha!

Eye Doctor - Good News!

Hello friends...

Today we visited Caleb's eye doctor at Vanderbilt. Because of the changes we found in the most recent MRI he wanted to evaluate his eyes. We are very happy to report this visit went well and we were encouraged as we left his office.

Dr. Donahue tells us that he sees NO change in his visual function and that his vision is tracking right in line with where it should for a child his age! He did this thing called an OCT scan which actually measures the thickness of his optic nerve and because he had the wisdom to do this at our last visit we had a good baseline to compare with. His opinion is that at this time we should take no action because we have a healthy child with good visual function - AMEN to that.

While we were there he called our neurosurgeon to chat about the tumor board and we learned that the review did not happen. It didn't happen because the neurosurgeon wanted to wait for Dr. Donahue to review Caleb and form an opinion before he presented the case. Caleb's case will be presented next week, and we are also blessed by the fact that the eye doctor happened to have a clear schedule at the time scheduled so he will attend. We are thankful for these provisions!

We will confirm this next week but we believe the current course of action will be another MRI in probably 3-6 months. We saw the pictures again today and got probably the best understanding of the size of the object we have ever gotten. The tumor is very real and there are still potential problems it will cause.

Please keep Caleb in your prayers and we invite you to celebrate with us today! There is much to rejoice in! We have received good news and our hearts are encouraged after having confirmed his vision is still in a great place. Thanks be to God for His protection over our child during this time.

MRI

Hello friends,

Today we went to Vanderbilt with Caleb to get another MRI. The morning went great - our prayers were all answered. Caleb was perfectly fine with not eating and his cough was all but gone. Austin was not back to 100% but he was able to join us. These are all answered prayers in our book.

When we got to Vandy things went great as well. Caleb was relaxed and was in very good spirits about the whole process. When they put the IV in he hardly blinked thanks to this numbing stuff he had on his hands. When it was time to take him away for the MRI he was calm and quite the trooper about the whole thing. Caleb was so proud of himself for how he took the medicine and how brave he was.... we were quite proud as well.

The waking up process is always entertaing because he is usually so far out of it. We got some cute video of him asking why mommy had three eyes and two mouths. After half an hour or so he was up and about and ready to go to pancake pantry for lunch. We enjoyed some delicious pancakes and then we were back to campus for a visit with the neurosurgeon.

The time reviewing the images was not nearly as pleasant. The news is still uncertain with regard to next steps but there have been changes and growth in the tumor that are not welcome. There is a portion of the tumor that shows "enhancement" - and this is troubling. There has always been this small part of it that has shown enhancement but that portion is larger in this scan.

The next steps are that a team of about 35 doctors will review his case on Monday to determine what is advised to do next.

We are really asking for your prayers for wisdom and peace at this time. Our little guy has such a great attitude and we want so much for him to lead a life with full function... we ask that you join us in prayer for his healing.

Some of you may know this already but we wanted to drop you a note of reminder that tomorrow morning Caleb is having another MRI. It has been 18 months since his last one so we are of course anxious but hopeful for good news.

We would love it if you would join us in prayer that Caleb will not have anxiety about the process, for clean instruments and of course for a good report!

Christmas 2010

Christmas was a such a sweet celebration this year! Caleb and Annelise were at such a fun stage- Caleb's anticipation and excitement was precious- he also was at an age where he was better able to grasp the amazing event of Christ's birth which has forever changed history. He even got to play Joseph in our CBS's play!

And Annelise was an absolute doll this year!! She had a blast opening presents! Her expressions and excitement over each gift was priceless! It was a joy to watch her. I just can't believe she's running around everywhere and talking up a storm- oh, how they change so much the first few years.

One of our traditions on Christmas Eve is for the kids to open up a pair of new Christmas PJ's to wear that night! It was fun for Caleb to remember that and look forward to opening his this year. Here they are on Christmas Eve showing off their PJ's under the dining room table- a favorite place for the two of them to play right now- that's another sweet thing this Christmas- Annelise is getting to an age where she can play with Caleb! She growls at him- literally- to get him to chase her around the house- she hides under the dining room table a lot!

Here we are at my parents. Grandaddy read The Night Before Christmas- a tradition we've done for years. Annelise is such a cheese ball!! We had a big Christmas at Mimi's and Grandaddy's as always!! Caleb got an enormous Nerf gun, which the whole family enjoyed, and Annelise got a new baby doll!

And here is my brother Hunter and his wife Leslie...they told us some really big and exciting news over the Thanksgiving holidays...they are having a baby!!!!!!! yea!!!! We are thrilled for them!! We gave them their 1st classic books for Christmas for the new baby!!! We are anticipating the news of the sex of the baby in February. She is due July 2nd...but we all know what the baby will look like-Ha! --dark skinned and dark headed just like their parents!!

On Christmas Eve day we had over Austin's dad and brother to celebrate! We enjoyed a yummy ham and the trimmings to go with it. After that we opened presents. Caleb got some Mexican Jumping Beans and Lincoln Logs and Annelise got a music set! And we all got a big laugh when I accidentally gave Chase one of Austin's gifts!! He started opening it, saw what it was, and then I about died!! Whoops! Sorry, Chase- maybe you'll get a carrying tool bag for your birthday this year!! Ha!

Here is Papa and his sweet girlfriend Meridith. She brought her daughter this year and what a precious young lady she was!!

On Christmas Eve we enjoyed several traditions- eating dinner, making cookies, putting on Christmas PJ's, and opening up a special ornament that represents their year. Caleb's ornament was a Superman. He guessed it before he opened it- he has LOVED Superheros! And Annelise's was a bumblebee. She has been very busy this year- and Ma started calling her a little bumblebee- it stuck!!

On Christmas day we celebrated with Austin's Mom's side. We enjoyed another big yummy lunch complete with Kathy's pecan pie! It was a wonderful white Christmas!! Here is Austin with his Pa. Pa absolutely adores Caleb and Annelise. I just love to watch him with them.

Here is Chase and his girlfriend Krystle. It was fun getting to know her this Christmas. She was really sweet to love on our babies too!

Here is Kathy and Jim. Kathy is becoming a big Auburn fan and got a fun Auburn "bling bling" ring from us! They got to go to the National Championship ballgame!! Wow!!

And here is Uncle Dewey and Aunt Janie-what dears they are!! Janie talked about how much they anticipate each month our prayer calendar pictures of our kids- that really means a lot, Janie- thanks for loving on our babies so much. What a gift you guys are.
As everyone enjoyed Caleb and Annelise's excitement and joyful responses to the gifts they received, the Lord reminded me on Christmas day how He truly desires us to be like children. The second our children entered KG's house the place seemed to come alive with laughter, excitement, and joy- isn't that what God has called us to? --To truly have and remember the joy deep within our hearts, because of the great gift of adoption into His family, that we would light up a room when we entered it? I've been encouraged this Christmas to live in such a way that even the smallest of gifts from the Lord will make my heart happy- even on the grayest of days-- and that I might bring bring laughter, joy, and peace to all I encounter.

Annelise had a blast playing with Adam (Austin's cousin) this year. He ate lots of yummy food she fixed!

Here is Caleb with his Buzz Lightyear wings pretending to fly!! --btw, Caleb is going to be having another MRI on February 2nd. He hasn't had one in a year and a half- which we are thankful but also nervous - he has to be put to sleep- we are anticipating more questions as well- please pray that we will have the words to say to him, that he will have peace in his heart and not worry, and that everything would go smoothly- not to mention the results- we do pray that nothing has grown or changed in the last year and a half. We pursued a second opinion from a doc in Birmingham, AL. He encouraged us to have MRIs done every year. So, here we are again. Thank you so very much for so many prayers lifted up on Caleb's behalf over the years.

Jim took Annelise outside to look at the snow- she wasn't so sure about touching it- she wanted to stay in his arms. ;)

On Sunday after Christmas we went sledding in the bits of snow we had. This is my favorite picture!! I can't believe God has blessed Austin and myself with 2 beautiful children- they are such a joy!!
...And speaking of children... we've decided to start back up the adoption paperwork!! Yea!! We have not forgotten about the little girl out there that God has chosen for our family!! I have a few short-term goals to finish in the next few weeks before officially calling our adoption agency, but we are really excited to be pursuing our little girl again!!

Misty - One Year

My dear friend Misty died one year ago today. She and I shared many wonderful memories over the 30 years of growing up together. After putting the kids to bed tonight I curled up next to Austin and cried remembering vividly not only the phone call I received that night and the agony that went with that call but also the flash of literally a hundred-plus memories of the two of us- all so dear to my heart.Soon after Misty died last year I posted a blog about her and shared some memories and photos. I also said that one day I would dig up some old pictures of us and post them. Well, tonight I got out the memory box and started digging. It felt good to look back. Here are a few...

Here's Misty at one of my birthday parties- i think I was turning 9 or 10.

This is one of my absolute favorites!! She and I played softball together for 3 years- this picture is us after one of our games. I love to see those Purity hats!! Misty was a lot better than me at softball- I stood out in left field chewing gum- that's when my dad started calling me Snooks! He'd yell, "Go, Snooks!" to try to wake me up, I'm sure!! The name stuck and everyone called me that all growing up-including Misty.

Here we are goofing off at an overnight birthday party we went to together. Misty was always singing! Check out those Umbro shorts I have on!

These pictures crack me up- we were asked to pose for an article in a magazine called Teenage Christian. The pictures were being taken by a family friend. I remember us both being nervous! I think we were in the 8th grade.

Here we are on Wilderness trek climbing up a Colorado mountain the summer before our Junior year of high school. What an amazing week we had!! It was such hard work but worth it to reach the summit and it's view from the top!!

Both our dads came with us on the trek which was very special. The hike was challenging and a memory I will cherish with my dad.

At the end of our senior year the girls in our youth group had a father-daughter date night. Here is Misty with her dad.

Here we are pledging Delta Sigma at Lipscomb University. We shared so many wonderful memories together pledging and just in general in college. We roomed just 2 doors down from each other. Misty's favorite singers at the time were the Dixie Chicks- she sang them from the top of her lungs often in those dorm rooms!! Her car was the "pledge-mobile" - she drove us everywhere- including runs to the Krispy Kreme Doughnut for crullers at 11:00 at night for our sweet sisters in Delta Sigma!!

Last picture here is us shopping with my cousin Allison for my wedding dress- what a sweet memory of the three of us when I found my dress!!

I look forward to seeing Misty's beautiful face in heaven one day - and to hear her laughing and singing again. Thank you, Jesus, for conquering death so that we all might be united again with not only our loved ones but with You, Lord. We are eternally grateful and indebted forever...may my life reflect the cost you paid to bring us home. Amen

Fall is here!

Well there is a lot to share from the Henderson home since I last blogged! We've been lots of places and shared some wonderful memories. I'll start with the latest and work backwards... Halloween...Caleb was Superman- he was VERY excited and counted down the days...and Annelise was a sunflower (Emily's old costume- it was fun to see it on her- I loved Emily in it!)

Here they are with Mimi and Grandaddy- by the way, Annelise has really started talking these days. She is saying all kinds of words like cracker, snack, water (which is La la- she can't make the "W" sound yet), ball, bellybutton, car, of course Mama, and Dada, Mimi, Papa and many others...but I couldn't believe that she actually said Grandaddy the other day!!! Of course sounds are missing from some of these words, but still! I was impressed that she was attempting! They tell me at CBS that she's going to be a talker- I guess I'm going to have two talkers running around my house!! ;)

Here is the whole gang! Each year we get together with our friends to trick or treat and take a picture- it's fun to see them grow and for us to add new sweet babies like Stella and Darcy!!! Yea!! There is not going to be enough room on the couch pretty soon!

In October we celebrated our church's 10 year anniversary. It was a really special time of looking back and remembering. Here's a picture of the core group of people that helped start it. I still can't believe that we were able to be apart of the birth of this church! It was not an easy decision, but we felt God calling us to take a step of faith as Peter did on the water with Jesus. Words can not describe the blessings God has bestowed on us through Fellowship, and we are eternally grateful that He gave us the courage. His faithfulness has fueled in us the courage to walk through other uncertain times and will continue to in the future. I'm amazed and humbled at the work God has done in and through us over the past 10 years, and we look forward to another 10 years!

Here we are for the 4th year in a row at the Gentry's Farm! This day for me is one of the highlights of the year. I absolutely love being outside in God's creation on a fall day with my family and our dearest friends- one day when my kids are too old to go to the Pumpkin Patch I am truly going to cry. I love it, love it, love it! However, in the midst of this day (and Halloween as well) I have been truly sad over the loss of my dear friend Misty. Last year at this time she took her kids to the Gentry's Farm- and I saw her for the last time at the Harpeth Hills Trunk-or-Treat event last year. She held up Annelise in her pumpkin outfit. It's hard to believe that she's not with us this year. I visited her grave site just recently- the ground is still slightly upturned. It is so hard to see her name etched there. I was reminded as the wind blew that the Word says that we are all like the flowers of the field...they bloom and have their radiance for just a short while and then are gone...I miss her so much and pray for her family daily.

Also, in October we went to the opening of the new PinkBerry frozen yogurt! Austin's dad and brother, Chase, recently brought this business to Nashville. It was an exciting event- and we loved the yogurt!! Caleb's favorite was Mango!!

In September our family took a beach trip together! We had the most wonderful week! It was really nice to have a good chunk of time with my parents, Ma, my brothers, and Leslie. We had a blast at the beach, playing cards (Will T. and Hunter taught us how to play poker!), cooking dinners together, and just hanging out. Unfortunately, just a few days before we left for the beach, Annelise came down with a really bad stomach virus that lingered into our beach trip- she was not exactly herself- but overall, it was a fabulous trip! Thank you, Mom and Dad, for a very memorable week!

In September one of Caleb's very best friends, Emily, was baptized! It was a very special day- We witnessed her profess her faith in Jesus as her Lord and Savior and watched her dad baptize her in the Stones River. It was beautiful! She is an amazing little girl her who at such a young age has grasped her own depravity and what her Heavenly Father has done for not only her but for all those who put their trust in Him. We love you Emily!!

Also, in September we had the privilege of keeping Austin and Sarah Beth at our home for a few days. Caleb was beside himself and loved every minute!! It was a really sweet time for me too to spend such quality time with our God-children! They are both precious and mean so much to us!!

Also, at the end of August we celebrated our 10th anniversary by taking a Caribbean cruise!!!! We truly had the time of our lives! It was a sweet time of rest and adventure. We enjoyed sleeping in, sunning, reading, eating, and taking some really fun excursions off the boat at the islands.

Lastly, back at the end of July- first of September we spent a weekend with Austin's family. We went to Long Hunter State Park and walked around part of the lake in the woods- it was beautiful- we saw several deer up close!! Caleb had such fun holding Dewey's hand and having his full attention! You are so good to him, Dewey- we love you!

Dinner at the Outback- this dinner didn't turn out quite like we had planned- it was a very long wait for a table plus a long wait for our food- Annelise was beside herself- we stuffed her with so much food to try to stop her from crying that she ended up throwing up in her crib in the middle of the night! It was nasty!!

Here are the ladies- Aunt Janie beside me and Kathy (KG), Austin's mom, beside her- they were very gracious and understanding with Annelise that night! Thank you!!

On Sunday we spent a lovey afternoon out at Dewey and Janie's farm. Grandma and Pa joined us too! We had the best time- Annelise fell in love with two things- watermelon and dirt!! Some of you may know this family but for those of you that do not I would like to share a bit of exciting news and ask for your prayers. I have worked with Mark for ten years, and for quite a few of these years he and Jen have had a heart for adoption. I don't even know to be honest how long this process has been for them, but they have been on this journey for a long time.

I have watched as they faithfully pushed ahead and I am so excited to share that they are leaving tomorrow to head to China. Nicole and I would like to ask for your prayers for their family as they travel - for safety and for efficiency in the process. We are thrilled to watch this next step unfold for their family and celebrate the provisions that have been made for this trip to occur. Milestones

It's been awhile since I last blogged, (Austin says I blog quarterly-that seems to be pretty true these days!) and over the last three months we have seen several milestones in the Henderson home. Here we are on the 4th of July. Caleb is 4 and 4 months and Annelise is almost 13 months- I can't believe it!

I'll start with Caleb's milestones. #1- reading books - About a year ago, Caleb started reading for the 1st time. Over the year he improved more and more as we practiced. I didn't have a curriculum. I just wrote words on blank paper, and we practiced sounding out. However, a few months ago, Karen, told me about these little readers called Bob Books that you could get at Barns & Noble. I had readers with my Kindergartners but had to leave those behind when I left teaching. I didn't know I could buy them at the bookstore! So, we purchased them, and Caleb has absolutely blown us away with the ease of his reading!!! We are SOOOO VERY proud of him!! Yea, Caleb!!!!!

Milestone #2- swimming. Austin and I are thrilled that Caleb has started swimming! He had a rough start, but sweet Kimberly has helped teach him. He is doing great! We will continue lessons for the next several years I'm sure.

Milestone #3- swinging. Caleb is swinging by himself- pumping like a mad man! He loves to swing as much as I do- reaching to the sky!!

Milestone #4- buckling himself into the car seat!! Whaoooo!!! It's about time!! We told him we'd go out for ice cream once he mastered it- he finally did- I am thrilled to only buckle in Annelise every time we go anywhere!!!! Thank you, Caleb!!!!

He is growing up for sure. He is really into superheroes right now- pretending to be Superman, Batman or Green Lantern; he loves to talk, as you know- he's a social bug! And, he has truly become a sponge when it comes to his Bible knowledge- we are amazed- he is memorizing much larger chunks of scripture- and our favorite book is the Jesus Story Book Bible- absolutely excellent!! It has made me cry a few times already!

And lastly- he passed his eye exam with flying colors- thank you, Father! And thank you for your prayers over the years! We are in the process with two other doctors in Alabama to get a 2nd opinion. We have an appointment in November; however, we are hoping that he will only have to review his file and not have to see him personally. We will see.

At the end of May Emma, Noah, and Caeden came to stay with us for a few days while their parents went on a trip. Caleb loved every moment!- and we did too! They are precious to us- we had so much fun!

I laughed at this picture of Caleb and Emily!! She came and stayed a night when her mother had baby number #3- Stella Grace. Caleb has been loving the sleepovers this summer!!

This picture, I think, will be a favorite of mine for years to come and will probably make me cry. Caleb wrote his whole name from memory for the 1st time (not just his 1st name). He was soooooo proud of himself!!! It is so rewarding to teach Caleb to read and write!

This was a tough fit- 4 wiggle worms in Annelise's small pool- where's Annelise?? I love Timothy's big grin and how he calls me "Cole." I could eat him up!

Annelise has had some milestones as well over the past few months. Milestone #1-turning one! I can't believe she's a year! She has changed so much and it's gone by so fast- she is the biggest snuggle-bug with not only her stuffed animals but also with Mommy and Daddy. We eat it up! She is definitely different than Caleb- she has a little more spunk-little more of an opinion- she absolutely loves the water and is not afraid- and she is what Ma calls a bumblebee (very busy and curious)-but she is so fun and such a sweetheart! We are loving her dearly. She also loves food as much as Caleb- if that's possible!!!

Milestone #2 - walking. Annelise is walking everywhere these days- it's been so fun to see her up on her feet! And look at that tan! She has her Mimi's skin.

Milestone #3- talking. Annelise is saying a few words! Dada, hot (without the "t" sound), Mama sometimes, and "Tuh" for Tuck- the neighborhood cat. Caleb can't wait to hear her say his name!

And Milestone #4- no longer a baby. This one is a milestone for both Annelise and myself. I just can't believe it. Austin and I want more children; however, we don't feel called to having any more of our own. We want to adopt. More than likely we won't be bringing home a baby. This is a big deal for me. I am done with pregnancy, with nursing, and with holding my own newborn infants- it's sad, but it feels right too. I have cherished these times with my two- thank you Lord for these precious gifts you have given us. It has been a tremendous joy.

And, lastly Austin and I have just reached a milestone- July 1st we celebrated our 10th Anniversary!!!!!! I just can't believe it!! It has been a wonderful 10 years. Yes, we were married at 21 and both still in school- but the Lord has been gracious- I wouldn't change it for anything! He is my knight in shining armor. Thank you again to everyone who made our wedding possible- especially our parents, our wedding party, and countless family friends who pulled it all together! We are leaving in two weeks for a cruise- just the two of us to continue our celebration!

And because it's been so long since I blogged last...back at the end of April we went to Merry Acres Farm with our best friends for the 3rd year in a row- these friends are rare- we do life together- not perfectly but authentically- they are gifts from above. We love you guys!!

Well, if are still reading this blog entry, I applaud you- it's a long one! The only other thing I'll add is that in the midst of the craziness of our lives with plenty of everyday obstacles alongside of some really tough things this year- like losing one of my dearest friends and spending the last 9 months in daily pain in my head and neck, I feel like God is meeting me here. He has reminded me that "Rejoicing in the Lord is my strength. " Neh. 8:10 and has given me this song this week...I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever.....

Spring is Here!!

The last several months have been a sweet time to watch the friendship between Caleb and Annelise grow. Annelise is at a stage where she is able to interact and play better with Caleb, and she is loving it! Annelise is 10 months now; she is crawling, waving bye bye, signing "more" and "all done" and loving Caleb's toys! She wants to do whatever Caleb does and be wherever he is!! Caleb has been very gracious and protective of her- he is a GREAT big brother. We pray they will always be close.

I love to see them loving on each other!

At the end of February our good friend Virginia and her precious son, Jack, drove down from Louiville for a few days. It was a fun visit. Jack was an absolute doll!! He's 4 months older than Annelise and was very very gentle with her. I just wanted to eat him up!! At the end of March, Karen and I took a road trip up to see her without the kids!! Yea!! It was a nice break, and we enjoyed the girl time with Virginia.

Caleb had a blast playing with his friends, Austin, John Mark, and Vada- this is my favorite picture!!! Vada didn't have a gun- that didn't stop her!! She made one with her fingers!!!

Annelise's favorite thing is the bath these days. From the second she gets in until you pull her out, she uses both hands to splash the water as hard as she can- over and over and over!! Forget about the toys- no need for any!! It's a hoot and a very big mess too!! She LOVES it!!

Caleb turns 4!! We can't believe it! We celebrated at Bounce U this year. It was truly a lot of fun for the kids and the adults! Annelise even went down a slide too.

We feel so blessed to have Caleb for 4 years with absolutely no change in his tumor. His eye sight couldn't be better. Thank you for your prayers. Speaking of prayers...we are in the process of seeking a second opinion and would love your prayers right now for wisdom. We will keep you updated.

Easter is here!! We celebrated with Austin's family on Saturday. Annelise had fun playing with Chase.

Caleb had to hunt hard for the eggs that KG and Jim hid- it was a good challenge! We decided that next year Annelise would give him some competition for sure!

It's been awhile!

It's been too long since I last posted which was about my dear friend Misty's death. There is not a day that goes by that my heart doesn't break for her family and that I wish I could see her again. I dream about her often. I dream lots of times that I know she is about to leave me, and so I hold on to her really tight. Misty is buried along the route to my parents' house. Every time I pass her I cry. I just can't seem to wrap my mind around the fact that she's over there in the ground under the snow-her body I mean- the body that I know- the girl that I grew up with- I know her nail beds, her laughter, the way she tied her tennis shoes, the way she pulled her hair out of her eyes...I just can't imagine the pain and loss her family faces every day because I hurt so deeply-deeper than I've ever hurt before- and I'm just a friend....
In the midst of this we have shared some wonderful moments over the last couple of months that I'd like to share. In this picture above we were getting ready to board a plane for California (Jan.31st) !!! Yes! I got a break and was able to join Austin on a work trip to San Diego!! Mom and Dad kept the kids- our first time to leave Annelise!! It was hard, but she did great!! That was an answered prayer.

We stayed at the historic Hotel Del Coronado!! It was beautiful!!! I got a chance to read and relax!! It was truly a gift!

After San Diego, I flew home; however, Austin flew to Denver and skied with some friends! He had the time of his life!! Austin grew up skiing with his family, and so this was a big treat to go back to the slopes. He actually snowboarded instead of skied. He said he had forgotten how much he enjoyed it. He also said he was reminded out there in the beautiful mountains of how big God truly is!

I can't believe she's 8 months now - sitting up, eating solids, saying "BaBaBa" all the time, and wanting to go everywhere!!! She's not crawling yet, but when you hold her she is the biggest wiggle worm- wanting to go and see and look and taste!! I'm loving her tons right now.

Christmas!

I know it's February, but I still wanted to blog about Christmas since I haven't! It was a range of emotions as we dealt with the loss of Misty. I had trouble celebrating as my heart and physical body were truly the saddest I think I've ever been. However, I felt in the deepest way the most thankful for our Savior's birth than ever before, for because of Him there is true hope and abundant life. It was really fun to enjoy Christmas with Annelise this year as it was her very 1st!! She was a doll!! She started sitting up in December which made Christmas all the more fun. She loved the shiny bows and brightly colored wrapping paper best!!

Christmas at Ma's!! I love walking in Ma's house for Christmas! The air smells of bacon, country ham, biscuits and gravy mixed with the smell of coffee & Tang! It's heavenly! We enjoyed seeing my Aunt and Uncle and our cousins and their husbands. It always feels like home- a safe comfortable place where laughter and good food are the main ingredients.

Kathy invited a friend this year for Christmas- his name is Jim! We really liked him!

And this is a picture of Kathy and her sister Janie with Annelise. They (along with the help of their dear friend, Debbie) worked for hours upon hours on Annelise's stocking!! They made stockings for their children and have pasted on the tradition to ours. It is truly a keepsake made with love! Thank you so much- we will cherish it!!

Here we are for Christmas with my parents! It always feels wonderful to go home to my house for Christmas. Even though we didn't get as much time with my brothers this year, it was still good to exchange gifts and celebrate. We enjoyed a delicious meal with them as well.

Caleb got all kinds of dress up clothes to pretend in this year! He got some fun play guns too!

And here we are celebrating Christmas with Austin's father. We stayed at our house and ate some yummy finger foods.

We gave Caleb a new "big boy" bike this year!! He got out with Daddy and Chase and practiced! He did great!!!!

Caleb got some pretty awesome Nerf guns for Christmas- so awesome that Daddy and Chase played with them most of the time! After opening presents, Caleb pretended to be a bear while Chase and Daddy hunted him!! They had a blast using couch cushions as barriers!! It was fun to see them playing so hard together.

Christmas was full of family this year, and I am so very thankful God has blessed us with so much family so close by.

Austin stuck this to Annelise's head!! I thought it was pretty mean! ;)

Last Friday I lost a dear, life-long friend of mine, Misty Ezell George. We grew up together and were only a month apart in age- our parents were and are the best of friends. We spent countless hours at each others' homes. We went to church together, school together, camp together, played ball together, vacationed together (that is we shared a tent together for 8 years when our families went canoeing every summer), and college together. She is a significant piece of my life-story, and I am changed for knowing her.
Misty had a laugh and smile that was contagious. She sang wherever she went. I can still hear her singing in the dorm the Dixie Chicks from the top of her lungs! She was full of energy and fun- everyone enjoyed being with Misty. She was always up for an adventure, which is something I admired in her- I was always a little more afraid or timid. She was the one to drag me into the cold cold river water when we canoed so that we could float down the rapids and sing "Comet it makes your teeth turn green..." When we shared a canoe she always wanted to hit all the rapids too!
She was a kid magnet, humble at heart, and full of life and love. She loved God, her Jeremy, her three precious children, her family, and others so well. I will cherish all of our memories together.

This is a picture of the last time I saw Misty- just a few weeks ago at my home church's Trunk-or Treat. She held up Annelise and doted all over her. She gave me a big hug- one that I won't forget.
The pictures to come are some that I found on my computer- some of us over the last 10 years. At some point I'll go through my memory bins in the attic and pull out some old pics of us as kids. I'll scan and post them then.

Here we are celebrating my 21st birthday.

Misty, Marcie, Mashea, and Emily came up to the boro one night and had dinner with me.

Here are my pledge sisters minus my roommate, Holly. Pledging with these girls was one of the most memorable and fun yet exhausting 4-5 weeks of my life. We went everywhere in Misty's "pledge mobile." The eight of us slept most nights (the 2-3 hours of sleep we got a night) in mine and Holly's dorm room. It was crazy!! But because we lived together for those weeks and endured all of the pledging activities together, we share a bond that I will treasure for a lifetime.

I have to share how God has showed me himself in the midst of this tragedy. My family last Friday night was decorating our Christmas tree when I placed an ornament on the tree that I had made several years ago in M.O.P.S. It had a scripture in it from John 14:17b. "He lives with you and will be in you." (Jesus speaking of the Holy Spirit to his disciples). When I read that I felt like God washed over me anew that He truly was with me and in me. I was joyful and thankful in that moment. Then just an hour or so later I received the phone call that our Misty had passed away. I felt like never before that God was so very far away. I kept telling Austin, "Where is God; I don't feel him." After the long night had passed, I woke up and the Lord reminded me of that verse from John. I opened my Bible and began to read all of John 14. I was very encouraged and felt God speaking over me that He was with me and in me- that He was with the Ezell's and George's and in them. Then while we sat and listened on Wednesday at the funeral service, the scripture read was from John 14. I was again reminded that He goes before me- he knows the events that will take place in our lives before we experience them, and he will give us a Word- he will give us the mercies we need.

Our senior year of college, Misty, Elizabeth, and Erin (not pictured-she must have been taking the picture) took a road trip to Harding University to see Martha Lynn perform in Spring Sing- her group one first place! We had a blast!

Here we all are in Misty's wedding in 2002. It was an absolutely beautiful ceremony and reception. We all approved of Jeremy- he passed the test!

To Mr. and Mrs. Ezell, Jeremy, Ella, Miles, and Griffin:

My heart bleeds for your loss. I will pray for strength, for peace, for hope, for laughter again, and for you to remember that God is good and that He is with you always. Here are some verses I am clinging to, and I pray you will find strength in these words as well:

Milestones

Well, I am so excited to say that Caleb has hit some milestones over the past two months!! I have been looking forward to the day that I would read Caleb his first chapter book- Charlotte's Web- and that day finally came this September!! I savored every moment that he and I spent reading one of my favorite books as a child. I actually read him MY Charlotte's Web that I read many times as a kid and saved. It was a very special time for the two of us when Annelise went down for her morning nap. Caleb would climb up on the couch and put his head in my lap as I read. I will cherish that memory and hope for many more moments like these with him and Annelise to come.

Another huge milestone for Caleb is that he has begun to READ!!! Yea, Caleb!!!! I am very very proud of him!! He and I are having some more formal "learning time" together since he isn't going to preschool. He has begun reading three letter words in word families like: og, at, et...it has been very fun teaching him to read and to see him surprise himself as he reads new words!

Annelise is growing and changing so much as well!! She'll be 5 months on the 11th of November- Wow!! We've been loving her big grins and watching her watch Caleb!! She zones in on him wherever he goes, flipping her head around to see where he is at all times!! It's so cute! And she is rolling over now and propping her arms up. When she sits at the dinner table with us, she reaches for our food and grabs anything she can. She almost pulled off the place mat with a plate of food on it the other day! I think she's getting read for solid foods- speaking of which, Annelise is eating better, which is an answered prayer. However, my milk supply is still not doing really well, so if you think to pray for me, pray for my milk! I am on herbs and have rented a Grade A pump to help; however, it's not boosting my supply enough at this point. But overall we are enjoying this precious baby girl, and I feel an overwhelming since of gratitude more and more each day for these two children God has blessed us with.

This is a picture of some of our dearest friends eating at Miller's Grocery. The two couples in the middle (the Moores and the Bakers) were in town briefly. It was a treat to see them!! We love you guys!!!!!

In September, Randi Lea (3rd from left) turned 30!! She invited several of us to join her for a weekend in Chattanooga- it was a blast!! Austin was very brave to let me go alone for the weekend while he stayed with the kids!! He did a fabulous job! We had the time of our lives with a memorable adventure involving some mice...thanks Randi Lea- I love you dearly and treasure our friendship!!!

Here's my family at our house for some chili and UT football!! And, I have wonderful news....my brother Will T. is engaged to the lovely Rebecca Curry!!! He surprised her just a few weeks ago when he went to Gatlinburg with her family. We love you guys and can't wait for the festivities!!!

Here we are at Harpeth Hills Trunk or Treat! We had fun going back to my home church the weekend before Halloween. Caleb dressed as a pirate and Annelise as a pumpkin!! Ma got Caleb the outfit awhile back, and he's been dressing up ever since playing pirates!! I told him I was kind of sad he's not something sweet this year...he's growing up!!

And here we are on Halloween...my favorite part of the fall is going to the Gentry's farm. We went with a bunch of our friends. God blessed us with no rain!!! Thank you, Lord! We had a blast!

MRI Results

Today we went to visit with Caleb's doctor and hear the findings from last week's MRI. We met them with eager hearts hoping, as many of you, to hear great news and we are thankful to report the findings are mostly great! The size of the tumor hasn't changed yet again (it never has really), and there are no indications of additional areas of concern in his brain. This is all very good news to our ears for sure.

You may recall from our last MRI (a year ago) that the "color" of the tumor had darkened, indicating less contrast and hence blood flow. A year ago there was only a small spot where contrast could be seen on the tumor. This finding gave us hope that perhaps this thing was winding down. The findings today were not really much different with the very small exception that the "Spot" of color was ever so slightly larger. The doctors say this change in size could well be a "technical" change where we are simply seeing a different view of the tumor or perhaps a slight change in the angle of his head during the scan. Nevertheless he is interested in following up with Caleb in 6 months with another MRI to double check that this isn't a sign of a changing tumor.

I suppose here you can see the contention between our joy that we have a healthy son who is not being advised for radical treatment and this possible finding that there is a change in his tumor brewing. If I am being completely honest both Nicole and I left feeling a joyful burden - if that is even possible. I think where we have landed is this... we can only choose to trust in God and place our faith that He is at work both in Caleb's life and in those around him, including us.

Today we got good news - that news is that in the time this was found (Caleb was 9mo) there has been no change in the size of the tumor, and the tumor which was once lit up with contrast now has a small portion of it showing that contrast. We are grateful and happy to know that we are not the ones calling the shots here and that God has heard the prayers of so many of you who are lifting him up often. Nicole and I sincerely thank you from the bottom of your hearts for your love and concern for our family. You are a wonderful blessing to us.

Good news... The MRI is over. Caleb did great and is enjoying a Pancake Pantry brunch with family. Thank you for your prayers. We will update you soon!

MRI Thursday

We just wanted to remind everyone that Caleb has an MRI tomorrow at 9:00 in the morning. We have to be there at 8:00 to prepare him for sedation. Please keep us in your prayers. We told him for the 1st time tonight about his "special spot" in his brain. He handled it well; we are grateful. We told him that we're taking him to the Pancake Pantry right after they take some pictures of his brain. He was excited- we hope that excitement carries him through tomorrow morning since he won't be able to eat anything before the MRI.

We will keep you posted; however we won't have results of the scan until next Wednesday the 2nd.
